How Theology Helps My Devotional Life Part 1

Who Am I Talking To?

“God who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…” (Heb 1:1,2) Since the dawn of creation, God has been communicating. Everything He has made declares His nature, His glory. As time went by, God’s Voice came through the prophets as they sought to communicate God’s heart and intentions. Despite this very human element of communication, God took His communication to the next level by sending His only Son to fully declare what He is like. All generations can now fully comprehend what God is like by beholding the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

I have found that centering my studies around Jesus and who God has revealed Him to be has totally opened up my devotional life. Early on in my Christian life I think I had this subtle fear that if I just focused on one aspect of the Godhead then I would somehow be letting God down. I didn’t want to neglect God in any way. I haven’t found this to be the case at all. As I study who Jesus is it actually clarifies who I talk to every day. In the same way I get to know my friends and family, I get to know God. His likes. His dislikes. All these things inform me about who I worship. Yes I worship God by faith. Yes I see Him dimly. For the Christian though, the dimness doesn’t have to remain. God beckons us further in Christ to know Him deeply!
